The best time of the year is finally upon us! Christmas is just around the corner. You’ve been saving up all year for vacation trips and holiday gifts and it’s probably the one time of the year when everything just seems right with the world. The young ones, home for the school holidays, are already dreaming of reindeer and wondering whether Santa Claus will fit in their chimney as he does in the movies. It all feels like rainbows and unicorns, save for one little problem: finding the perfect gifts.
We’re pretty sure some of the most asked questions on Google right now read something like: “What is the perfect gift to get dad for Christmas?” or “Great family Christmas gifts.” If you’ve bought your dad a “No. 1 DAD” mug three years in a row, it’s about time to think of something different.
Here’s a thought; with the crime rate traditionally going up over the festive season, how about reading up on five security products that would make for great gifts?
Certainly not a popular choice of holiday gift but hear us out! Say you’re planning to take the family on a trip to the Maasai Mara for a week or so. The kids have been looking forward to it all year round. Only one little problem; burglars tend to pick on houses that are or seem to be unoccupied over the holidays. A smart way to go around this would be to ask a friend to stay at your place while you are away, but what if no one is available at the time?
I.P CCTV cameras allow you to monitor your house remotely via your mobile phone or tablet, which means you can keep an eye on your house and get help should you notice anything out of the ordinary. Who wouldn’t want such a gift for the holidays?
- Intruder Alarm System:
So here’s another product we think would be ideal as a gift, especially if you know anyone who will be away from home for more than a few days. Why not help them keep their home safe by getting them a wireless intruder alarm system? Wireless alarms use magnetic contacts, motion, and vibration sensors to detect unauthorised entry. Once the system is armed, it will trigger should the sensors detect any motion, vibration (as in breaking glass), or when a door is opened. What’s more, with a GSM transmitter the owner will receive an SMS alert any time the alarm is triggered, keeping them in the know at all times.
- Personal Safety Alarms:
Personal alarms are extremely affordable, lightweight, easy-to-use, and discreet as they can fit right into your pocket without attracting undue attention. Should you be in distress, all you’d need to do would be to pull a rip cord, triggering a loud siren that would surely deter even the most persistent burglar.
Personal alarms are ideal for when you’re out and about by yourself, or as a simple safety measure that one might want to teach their kids to use. They could also come in handy for individuals who tend to arrive home late in the night or for when one goes for an early morning or late evening work-out.
We think this would make for a great, practical Christmas gift, wouldn’t you agree?
- Carbon Monoxide Detectors:
Now, not to put a damper on the whole Christmas vibe, but around 400 people die due to carbon monoxide poisoning every year in the United States. The tricky thing with carbon monoxide is that it is odourless and tasteless, meaning it is really difficult to detect until when it might be too late. Sure, the Mrs. might be yearning for a swanky set of cosmetics or the latest smart phone available this Christmas, but she would probably be just as appreciative of her partner looking out for their family by installing carbon monoxide detectors on every floor in their home, right? (Just don’t quote us on this when she asks for a diamond ring though!)
With all the family get-togethers, high school/college reunions, parties, and barbeques scheduled in December, and with Kenya being the nyama choma nation, things are bound to get a little wild during the holiday celebrations. The risk of fire in the home becomes very real, very quick and one needs to be prepared for any eventuality just in case.
With a carbon monoxide fire extinguisher, you’ll be able to put out fires involving any flammable liquids or gases, in addition to electrical fires, making an extinguisher the ideal gift for putting out any fires in the kitchen or out back where you would typically be barbequing. Fire blankets on the other hand are made of fire-resistant material and work by simply “suffocating” the fire of oxygen.
Wouldn’t it be really considerate of you to show up at your neighbour’s Christmas barbeque with a fire blanket as the hosts’ gift? No, really, think about it!
